Engagement Sessions // What to Wear

So far we have discussed The Why’s and How to Pic a Spot in this Series all about Engagement Sessions. Today I would like to cover one of the most asked questions – What to Wear.

It’s All About You ♥

This title gives away the number one secret of the topic – It truly is all about YOU! Photographs never lie, if you feel beautiful in your skin (and clothes) it will show. Put together an outfit, that makes you feel like you are a top model. Put together something that screams YOU. If you like summery, feminine dresses made out of lace – go for it! If you want to wear that one golden, sparkly dress you’ve saved up for a special occasion since two years – your E-Session could be the perfect time to break it out.

Colors, Patterns & More ♥

Now you might ask yourself ‘So I can wear anything, no restrictions?’ Yes you can! Like I said, it’s all about YOU. But as you might assume, there are a few things that work best in terms of photography.

  • solid colors – Look at solids as your safe harbor.
  • light colors – My style of photography is light and bright, therefore lighter colors work much better than dark ones. This doesn’t mean I want you to wear all white though;)
  • low contrast patterns – Patterns are great, but you have to be a little careful with them. Go with softer patterns, rather than bold, high contrast ones.
  • lace textures – In my book, lace is always a hit ♥ (and I just had to bring it up…)

Now that we have cleared the question of colors and patterns, let’s move on to the Style. This question depends on two main things: Your personal style and the location you have picked. The outfit you put together should represent who you two are as a couple and somewhat match with the spot we are going to be photographing at.

It doesn’t always have to be high fashion! How about a fun bathing suit – retro style..?

For the Groom ♥

Guys, you have one of two main rules to play when it comes to outfits. The first is to dress yourselves in a simple way, light button up shirt and jeans for example, to let your gorgeous bride shine. The second one is to dress up as well. I’m talking of bow ties, suspenders and funky shoes. This of course isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Try to pick out your outfit that matches somewhat with your girls clothes. And I’m not saying if she is wearing yellow, you have to wear yellow as well. No, I’m talking more of the style and way she is dressed. If she’s wearing cute cowboy boots try not to wear your flip flops;)

A Good Excuse ♥

Girls, I tell you, an Engagement Session is the best excuse to go out and buy some cool new pieces;)It’s also the perfect timing to get your Hair and Make-Up done professionally as well as your Nails. The first two will make you feel like a rock star plus you can choose to test run your Wedding Do at the same time! One of my signature moves is to take pictures of your hands. It’s hard to explain, but I feel that hands can tell how much a couple is in love with each other. That’s why I suggest to have your manicure done as well.

Shoes & Accessories ♥

Lastly I would like to talk a little bit about Shoes and Accessories. I feel that shoes say a lot about a person and I like to capture that as well, like I love to capture hands. This is again the perfect timing to go a little crazy in this department. Get yourself some amazing looking High Heels or a brand new pair of Toms.

With accessories I mainly mean jewelry. Do you have a necklace that your fiance gave you, years ago? If that is the case, bring it to the shoot! Or maybe you have earrings that your Grandmother once wore, bring those as well. Such pieces will help big time to add lots of personal details to your photographs.

And lastly, remember to bring your Engagement Ring! If it was packed in a special box (for example a blue one from Tiffany’s) bring it so we can take a few shots with it. Again, this adds lots of personality to your end result.

All that said, I want to mention it again, it’s all about YOU! Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful. Wear crazy colors or a subtle grey lace dress. Be creative and remember it’s not just about the clothes you wear, but about the one you love! Have fun ♥

I truly hope this series has inspired you to plan something really awesome for your Engagement Shoot!
